ABSTRACT

Joseph Reid was a Scottish private in the Rifle Brigade who wrote home to his family in Banffshire. He died of illness in January 1855. His family was notified of his death by another soldier in his regiment, John Reid, who was a namesake, but not a relative. According to an edited copy of John Reid’s letter contained in the National Army Museum’s file of eighteen of Joseph’s letters, the latter likely died of dysentery.
