ABSTRACT

Fanny Duberly (1829–1903) was married to Captain Henry Duberly, the paymaster of the 8th Hussars. She accompanied him to the Crimea, and was the only officer’s wife to remain throughout the whole war. She published her journal shortly after the war, and it was controversial. While widely acclaimed, a number of people thought it unseemly for a lady to have been in the East throughout the conflict. Given that she was only 25 and beautiful, it was also wrongly suspected that she was Lord Cardigan’s mistress. After the war the Duberlys served in India. Fanny’s health suffered and she never published again.
