ABSTRACT

As noted earlier, Corporal John Ryder of the 32nd Foot, was born in Twyford, Leicestershire and enlisted in 1843. He served four years in India, retiring from the army in 1850, after which he returned to Leicestershire and joined the police force. In the short excerpt below he describes the rape of a native girl in India. It is impossible to know the extent to which British soldiers perpetrated sexual assaults on Indian women and girls.
