ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a detailed and critical review of the rich, growing body of research on the acquisition of sociolinguistic variation in second language Spanish. We introduce readers to key terms and critical issues, and provide an overview of foundational – as well as recent, innovative – work on the topic with the aim of highlighting the development of the field, describing its current state, and foreshadowing future directions.
