Additional Language Learning in the Context of Indigenous Language Reclamation

A devastating impact of settler colonialism on Indigenous communities has been widespread language shift. In response, individuals and communities are working to reclaim their languages through a variety of methods. In this chapter, we present an overview of additional language learning in the context of Indigenous language reclamation, with a focus on North America. This chapter highlights how these contexts differ from most second language acquisition studies, and how work on additional language learning has contributed methodological tools and generated theoretical questions.
