ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a broad perspective on the sociolinguistic development of learners abroad by discussing the findings of recent research on how, why, and the extent to which learners develop variable features abroad. The main research methods employed in recent and past studies are presented, which are largely centered on pre- and post-test research designs. This chapter ends with recommendations for practice, such as increasing learner awareness of sociolinguistic competence, and suggestions for future research which include investigating the long-term effects of sociolinguistic development by learners abroad.
