ABSTRACT
Although there is a theoretical role of working memory (WM) in the L2 acquisition of sociolinguistic variation, this relationship remains largely understudied. This chapter outlines the research on the role of WM in L2 acquisition more generally, clarifying key terms and core issues. Furthermore, an argument is presented for why WM should be considered in the L2 acquisition of sociolinguistic variation along with a summary of extant research on this topic. Finally, an overview of the main research tools for measuring WM is provided. The chapter concludes with best practices and future directions in the research of WM and L2 sociolinguistic variation.
