ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the methods used to study language attitudes of second language learners. It briefly reviews previous research and then outlines relevant methods. This chapter focuses on a specific experimental technique: speaker evaluation studies. In this type of study, participants listen to a number of recordings of different accents or vernacular features. They are then asked to share opinions about the voices they have heard. The chapter outlines the steps that are normally taken, and it discusses the issues one may face when designing a speaker evaluation study for L2 learners.
