ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights audience development in classical music from two perspectives. First, it takes a close look at the growing number of well-educated young musicians leaving the music academies to find employment in the music market, which is characterized by a decrease in permanent jobs and an increase in freelance work. Second, the authors provide insight into audience development (or rather, the many audiences that exist) on the basis of empirical data. Against this background, the text outlines some perspectives on the development of the music profession, music pedagogy, and cultural policy.
