ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of the impact of Brexit in the area of external fisheries policy. The chapter examines the Withdrawal Agreement, but also the possible consequences of a ‘hard’ Brexit and the alternative measures proposed or examined so far in order to mitigate it. The examination of the situation which would have resulted in a ‘no deal’ scenario may still be interesting in case of the absence of an agreement or arrangement covering fisheries after the end of the transition period. The chapter also analyses more specifically the impact of Brexit on each category of international agreements, namely multilateral agreements, RFMOs and bilateral agreements. Some final thoughts will be expressed on the future agreement covering fisheries that the EU and the UK undertook to make best endeavours to conclude by 1 July 2020.
