Clive was 5 and new to primary school when a medical officer called in his classroom, at the request of his teacher, and observed his odd behaviour. Soon afterwards Give’s parents were asked to come and discuss with the Headteacher something which they feared, knew that they had observed, but were reluctant to admit existed. For some months his behaviour had been unusual, especially when he thought he was alone; in a play situation he could be seen mimicking a flying movement, jumping up and down and ‘flapping’ his arms for surprisingly long periods, his apparently alert and attractive face looking tense and drawn. This could continue as an exclusive activity for an hour or more at a time and attempts to divert his attention were useless.
