ABSTRACT
From the time of the discovery and settlement of the Americas, the passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans has been the raison d’être of Panama. The port cities at each terminal point of this passageway, Panama and Colon, and the narrow strip of land that runs between them have been the nerve center of the country of Panama throughout its history and have dominated all the important events that have affected Panama’s development.
