ABSTRACT

What is it with all this joking about sex? I'm going to tread on dangerous ground here, because people don't like to be told that humor is often not about humor, that there's more going on in a joke than just wit or amusement. I mean, sex is really not all that funny, is it? Somerset Maugham, the novelist, joked that "the posture is ridiculous" but that's true of washing the kitchen floor, and I haven't heard too many standup routines about that.
