ABSTRACT
Forty years ago, in Explorations in Autism, Donald Meltzer offered eloquent testimony to the complexity of autistic experience (Meltzer et al., 1975). His keen formulations remain as valuable today as when introduced in 1975. It was his capacity to capture and describe complexity that I want briefly to highlight as a context for the specific developments offered by Suzanne Maiello and Didier Houzel.
