ABSTRACT
The engineering constructions of ancient Sinhala were of the type that Wittfogel indicates should be typical for an hydraulic-based oriental despotism, and although the traditional reputation of Sinhalese monarchs corresponds to the pure stereotype of the oriental despot, nevertheless the actual Sinhalese social system was not far removed from European feudalism.
