ABSTRACT

During the eleven years that I have been Head of my present school, a major part of my role has been concerned with the professional development of staff— enabling the school to develop and grow in response to constant changes. Encouraging teachers to continue to learn new skills and to adapt to new circumstances, in a period of unprecedented change for special education, has been a challenging but rewarding experience. Why school focused inservice training (INSET)? If we continually seek to improve the quality of teaching and learning, school-based INSET is a way of achieving this upgrading (Casteel, 1984).
