ABSTRACT

The issue of the connections between in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and preimplantation diagnosis (PID) cannot be overestimated in its significance for future developments – especially if the success rate of IVF rises: let us assume so in a kind of thought experiment for the next few minutes. Let us also assume that the combination of IVF and POD could be used generally – and not only to help infertile couples. Let us assume furthermore that genetic tests and so the possibilities for PID could become better and better. (The question which cannot be discussed here is whether these assumptions have a realistic background or are mere science fiction.)
