ABSTRACT

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) in Germany is regulated by the Embryo Protection Act (Gesetz zum Schutz von Embryonen 1990) and the guidelines of the Federal Physicians Chamber (Richtlinien 1994). The Embryo Protection Act (ESchG) reserves to physicians the sole right to perform IVF (ESchG §9) and also regulates a number of other matters associated with IVF such as embryo and sex selection (ESchG §3), donation of embryos (ESchG §1) and also postmortem fertilisation (ESchG §4).
