ABSTRACT

Some years ago, in 1990, I participated in an international conference on in vitro fertilisation (TVF). It was organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO), who wanted to discuss and reach conclusions on the future place of IVF in the treatment of infertility. The idea was to discuss IVF, which at that time was a rather new technology, from a medical technology assessment point of view. The aim of the conference was to reach agreement on a set of recommendations for rational and appropriate use of IVF (Stephenson and Wagner 1993).
