ABSTRACT

The subject of governance is growing in academic circles. Its popularity is evident in its recent general coverage in handbooks by various publishers (cf. Bevir, 2011; Levi-Faur, 2012; Winand & Anagnostopoulos, 2019) and in handbooks, like this one, examining governance as applied to a specific field or context of study. Organisational (or corporate) governance has received most of the attention in sport management and with good reason. It builds upon the long-standing concern for volunteer boards, strategy and principal-agent relations involving staff, sponsors and event organisers. Likewise, what is called “systemic governance” in this volume has demonstrated an equal prominence owing to the importance of understanding organisational networks, partnerships and the exercise of authority within the wider sector.
