ABSTRACT

Debate around the role of the board of directors is a common feature of the corporate governance literature (Van den Berghe & Baelden, 2005). In the sport governance literature, however, the concept has received far less attention. Similarly, while the structure and composition of boards has been a cornerstone of mainstream governance research for two decades (Mcintyre, Murphy & Mitchell, 2007), it has been neglected by researchers interested in the governance of sport specifically. Thus, there remain significant gaps in our understanding of “what boards do” in sport organisations and how those boards are best structured. The aim of this chapter is to contribute to that research gap by bringing together existing studies in those two areas, assessing current levels of knowledge and identifying avenues for future research.
