ABSTRACT
Trying to make sense of the non-system of education in which American adults participate is almost as easy as unravelling a plate of tender spaghetti with a pitchfork. As suggested in the previous chapter, the many interests, institutions, philosophies, purposes and actors involved are too numerous to disentangle readily. No classifications seem to be mutually exclusive. As a result, all kinds of exceptions often exist to most rules selected for explication and clarification. Nevertheless, efforts must be made to organize the chaos that characterizes the topic. This chapter, thus, continues the attempt at clarification initiated in chapter two.
