ABSTRACT
When my intellectual pursuits and interest in plantation slavery and present-day relations of inequality in Barbados led my graduate studies at Brandeis to take a linguistic turn, I faced a vast body of research and knowledge that was as exciting as it was challenging. Notably so for me in looking for clear and specific ways to link language variation and change to social relations.
