ABSTRACT

When I arrived at Penn to start my graduate studies, John and Angie Rickford were among the first people I met. They were friends and colleagues, instantly welcoming, and rock-steady anchor points amid the whirlwind of graduate school. With their international experience, they were more sophisticated than most of us, and I think John’s prep school background had given him more dedicated and efficient work habits than I had acquired while skating through less challenging high school and college years.
