ABSTRACT
The history of modern parenting focuses on changing roles and functions for children—in the family and in society at large—and how parents both facilitated and reacted to these changes. But it also reflects larger shifts in society, such as the increasing separation of work from home or changing gender roles that generated often complicated and difficult parental responses. Modern childhood and the modern family differ from their premodern counterparts, and parenting is directly involved in these transformations.
