ABSTRACT
As noted in the first edition of this Handbook in 1995, Rutter concluded that the concept of maternal deprivation had been useful in terms of forcing a recognition that the qualities of parent-child relationships constituted a central aspect of parenting, that the development of social relationships occupied a crucial role in personality growth, and that abnormalities in the relationships are important in many types of psychopathology.
