ABSTRACT

One of the most influential environmental factors that impacts child development is parenting. Parenting is a multidimensional construct composed of cognitions and practices which can be measured by different sources using various methods. How parenting is operationalized and measured can have a broad impact on study findings. This chapter reviews types of parenting, measurement techniques and issues related to the measurement of parenting, such as measurement bias, measurement level, choosing reporters, measurement across groups and development, and the theoretical conceptualization of parenting. Finally, various instruments for measuring parenting cognitions and practices are detailed.
