ABSTRACT
Through the past centuries public, private, and governmental institutional libraries have been acquiring and preserving the recorded human experiences of the past, generally with emphasis on the printed record. It has been, however, only in the past three decades that there has been a dramatic expansion in the creation of archival or manuscript agencies by government, private institutions and associations, business, and the academy to gather and preserve the non-print records of historical, research, and information value.
