ABSTRACT
If the thought of wearing someone else’s shoes gives one pause, then consider the plight of the archivist accepting a new position at an established archives or manuscript collection. Like our feet, each archival or manuscript repository is unique or very nearly so in its subject area covered, in its collections held, in its clientele and in the way, often idiosyncratic to a fault, in which it describes and makes available its resources.
