ABSTRACT
The Salvation Army was founded in England in 1865 by William Booth. Its primary goals were saving souls and providing for the religious needs of the poor in the East End of London. However, Booth soon learned that those without food or shelter were not receptive to the Christian message. The Salvation Army soon adopted programs to aid the poor including inexpensive meals and shelters where the Army could serve man’s spiritual and physical needs.
