ABSTRACT

The years since World War II have witnessed a remarkable growth in archives and manuscript depositories in the United States and Canada. The National Archives, which was established in 1934, greatly expanded its activities after the war assuming responsibility for records management, a more active National Historical Publication and Records Commission and the Presidential Library System. The years since 1945 also have seen the development of hundreds of new archival programs, including those representing churches, business firms, professional organizations and other institutions.
