ABSTRACT
This chapter argues that certain ongoing debates concerning understanding would benefit from paying closer attention to Plato’s methodological approach to understanding (epistêmê). In particular, whereas most epistemologists today focus on giving an account of the minimal conditions under which a person counts as having any understanding at all, Plato focuses on the conditions of ideal, perfect, or complete understanding and analyses partial understanding as approximations to that ideal.
