ABSTRACT
The election of Donald Trump, like the Brexit vote and the wave of rightwing populism sweeping much of Europe are expressions of a deep crisis of the political legitimacy of liberal democracies, as far-reaching and potentially dangerous as that in the interwar period in Europe.
