In a highly fragmented party system like the Italian one, even the minor parties often play a major role. The two established parties of the liberal political family (the Italian Republican Party, or PRI, and the Italian liberal Party, or PLI) as well as the representative of "new politics" (the Verdi or Greens) are important parties in the Italian party system, ¹ despite receiving less than 5 percent of the vote.
