ABSTRACT
The ecosystem concept has had a substantial impact on research and theory in anthropology and other social sciences. The central thesis of this paper is that this concept, and the theoretical and methodological framework of systems ecology that nurtured it, have made and can only make a very limited contribution to anthropology.
