ABSTRACT
The first section of this chapter offers an historical account of the emergence of critical rural sociology during the 1930s, and a content analysis of the literature of the period. 1 In parallel fashion, the second section of this chapter explores the political and material conditions that nurtured the emergence of today’s critical rural sociological research and literature.
