ABSTRACT
The world's increasing population confronts us all with the pressing problem of how to feed ourselves and our ever-increasing brethren. One. solution is to transform deserts that now cover one-eighth of all land surfaces into fertile food-producing regions by means of irrigation agriculture. Yet reclaiming deserts is complex, entailing the creation of symbiotic relationships delicately balancing interactions of plants, land, water and people.
