“Bringing Home Development”: The Impetus of Ideology for Women’s Groups Near the Kenyan Coast

Voluntary, grass-roots women’s groups proliferate locally throughout Kenya. They are acknowledged by administrators, from local levels to the President, as crucial to the achievement of national development goals, but unlike women’s organizations in the First World, the primary aim of those in Kenya is pragmatic, rather than political. Their goals are to develop local infrastructure, generate income, and to improve the quality of life of members’ families.
