ABSTRACT
Like the Bible, the plays of Shakespeare, and Plato's Republic, the United States Constitution stands as a canonical text at the root of an interpretive tradition. As theology construes Scripture, as literary criticism and philosophical scholarship elaborate their texts, so constitutional adjudication brings forward new perspectives on the basic principles underlying U.S. political order.
