ABSTRACT
The contemporary Western version of the role of "artist" emerged from the Renaissance and achieved modern form in the romantic movement of the nineteenth century (Gimpel, 1968; Becker, 1982). It is a male role, which is to say the conditions of producing art and the relations of power that have institutionalized art as a category of valued cultural products have historically favored men as performers of the role.
