ABSTRACT
In the following essay, the author and columnist Timothy Egan (1954–) expresses his deep concern for the fate of American democracy. That democracy is endangered, he argues, because the level of political and historical knowledge of its citizens is disturbingly low. It is low in large part because of the lack of civic education, that is, the education of citizens that prepares them to exercise the rights and duties of citizenship.
