Democracies End When They Are Too Democratic

In this essay, the conservative columnist and author Andrew Sullivan (1963–) argues that democracies effectively commit suicide when they become too democratic. Citizens who lack civic virtue—that is, a sense of self-restraint and civic responsibility—are prone to excesses that undermine and eventually destroy their democracy. Sullivan cites signs that American democracy is in a dangerous decline from which it might not recover.
