ABSTRACT

The professional sporting landscape has evolved at a phenomenal pace over the last thirty of years. One of the main drivers for this has been the growth in commercialisation and advances in technology which has allowed professional sport to enhance its potential revenue streams and deliver its product to a global audience. Against this backdrop, sporting organisations have also expanded at a rapid pace, thus bringing the issue of ownership and governance of sporting organisations further into the limelight. There are many different types of ownership present in the modern-day sport industry - one of the most common being corporate ownership. This chapter attempts to define what corporate ownership of sport is, how it works and whether or not it is an appropriate form of ownership for sport organisations given the challenges that come with balancing multiple objectives in sport considering on-field and off-field agendas.
