ABSTRACT
Almost 100 children and adults arrive in the foyer. Most are Arabs, but there are also African and Turkish women with their children, a group of Asian heritage, an Eastern European couple, and a few elderly ethnic Danish men. Some are dressed in everyday outfits, some in worn-out clothing, some women are dressed up with stilettoes, lip stick, and accessories, some wear hijab. Most of the children are wearing costumes, for example, a police officer, a Danish national team soccer player, a children’s television figure, a belly dancer. One African Muslim girl did not bring a costume, so an Arab Christian woman offers her a hat as a substitute. In the communal room, the tables are set for the evening meal, colorfully decorated with candles, tulips, napkins, and paper ornaments. A pile of homemade songbooks lies on every table. While a group of Danish and Arabic women finish the last preparations for the meal in the kitchen, people get seated at the tables.
