ABSTRACT
Mexico and Canada are separated by distance. But more than that, they are separated by the specific characteristics of what lies between them — the United States — and the particular relationship each country has maintained with this intervening entity. The asymmetrical bilateral relationship that both Canada and Mexico have with the United States has impeded fundamental understanding between these two distant neighbors. This asymmetry has a long history, and it is likely to endure for some time to come.
