Cristina Peri-Rossi was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1941, She holds the equivalent of a master's degree in linguistics from the Instituto de Profesores Artigas, and from 1961 to 1971 she taught at several Uruguayan institutes. Peri-Rossi was one of the main contributors to the distinguished leftist weekly Marcha. In 1972 she left Uruguay to seek exile in Spain; she now has Spanish citizenship.
