ABSTRACT

It was a storybook meeting. In her last year of college, Melanie found herself at a party staring across a room full of people at him, Joe. As he crossed the room, she felt her heart race so fast that she could barely hear the music. They talked all night long, Joe telling her how beautiful she was and how she made him laugh. Melanie was overcome with happiness in the days and weeks to come as Joe continued to make her feel like a princess. Despite arguments against it from her parents, after a few short months of dating, the two were married. At the time they met, Melanie was in school following her lifelong dream to be an architect. Her dream was cut short, however, when she discovered after just a few months of marriage that she was pregnant. Joe explained that the children would have to come first and that Melanie’s goal of a career in architecture would have to wait. It would take too much time and money away from the children, he reasoned, to go beyond her degree for the necessary architecture licensing. Melanie acquiesced, disappointed but happy about her newfound role as a mother.
