ABSTRACT
The essay shows how an Anglo-American student developed a critical awareness of her own community’s history and an appreciation of diversity from the earliest days of her schooling. A physical debility leads to a change of major in her college education. Through a study abroad program in France, she further develops her translingual proficiency. She continues her quest to make the world beautiful, a metaphor that has remained with her from the children’s story read to her by her parents.
