ABSTRACT
In order to understand the present legal status of Jerusalem, it is necessary to examine first the status of the city when Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire. Only then is it possible to evaluate the impact of events on Palestine and on Jerusalem in particular after the disintegration of the empire at the end of the First World War.
