During the third revolutionary civil war (1946–1949), the Nationalists and Chinese Communists waged their final campaigns for leadership over China and for the allegiance of the Chinese people. Scholars are still debating the sources of the Communist victory in 1949, but part of the answer lies in what happened in the Chinese countryside
